Holiday Magic - The WATCH Holiday Dinner
On December 16th, WATCH welcomed elementary students to a festive holiday dinner to Hart House. WATCH (Words, Actions, Thoughts, Character, Heart) is a student volunteer organisation that tutors daily at Lord Dufferin elementary school, the Kiwanis after-school club, and volunteers at a local soup kitchen.
WATCH’s annual holiday dinner is an event that brings together approximately 150 children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old, along with approximately 50 family members and staff from the community centers and schools where WATCH members volunteer. This event comprises a dinner and gift-giving to all the children, as well as a magician, facepainting, and various other forms of entertainment throughout the evening. The holiday dinner allowsWATCH volunteers to show how much we value the children and their families, that they deserve special occasions and memories during the festive season. These children come from Regent Park, an area in downtown Toronto where over 68% of the families live below Canada’s Low-Income Cut-Off rate. Almost 7 in 10 families in Regent Park live in poverty. On December 16th, these children can celebrate the holidays just like any other privileged child.
We at WATCH owe the Social Justice Committee a huge thanks for making it possible through partnership funding to cover entertainment like the DJ and magician. These aspects of the dinner are purely for the joy of the kids, and are integral to the spirit of the event. The families don't come because it is a "charity event" and because they are from Regent Park, which demographically puts them in a category to receive charity. WATCH seeks to treat everyone as a guest of honour, inviting them to the most beautiful building U of T has to offer. So, while on the surface spending SJC budget on such entertainment may not seem cognate to its principles, the two are very well aligned in that they offer exactly the equity we seek to achieve.
